As we stare into 2023, our places are going to need to be confident, collaborative, clearheaded, creative and connected to forge ahead in challenging times. Here, thinkingplace’s Founding Director John Till, provides his musings on what will matter:
1. There’s no way around the fact that it’s going to be tough for our cities, counties and towns but that doesn’t mean giving up!
2. This will be a year to think outside the box and your place boundary, what relationships can benefit your place? And these could be next door or next continent, a sectoral link or a research opportunity.
3. Double down on your place story to really understand what makes you stand out, it’s a time for priorities.
4. When you know your assets, sweat them for all its worth and once you’re clear on the opportunities, focus on them without distractions.
5. In challenging times, maximise the role of your anchor institutions, they have longevity and stability.
6. Collaborate like crazy, a coalition of the willing in your place might make all the difference.
7. Encourage your stakeholders (especially your businesses) to be your ‘place salesforce’, their networks, relationships and contacts may reap rewards.
8. Don’t get too bogged down internally, you still need to be looking out for those growth prospects.
9. Get your place geared up for funding/investment opportunities, be project ready linked to your place story.
10. Use the Shared Prosperity Fund wisely, not just for short-term projects but to create that place led, place-based approach for the future.
