What I learnt from an inspirational City Nation Place UK 2021

Last week it was great to meet with fellow place branding people at what has always been the most important event of the year – City Nation Place UK.

It was a fantastic line up of speakers and the whole day was stacked with learning, best practice and ideas.

Here are a few points I picked up on:

  • Brand Britain continues to have a tremendous reputation overseas
  • Yet how can we only rank 23rd in the world for natural beauty!
  • If you haven’t checked out ‘Unboxed: a festival of creativity for the UK 2022’ I would urge you to, it looks amazing
  • Having an ‘I love with a red heart my place tote bag isn’t distinctive place branding!
  • Birmingham are going to stage a stunning Commonwealth Games that will have a long lasting benefit for residents of the city
  • Authenticity is everything, too many places are trying to be something they aren’t and will get found out
  • If you want to see a town reinventing itself through events and green space take a look at Stockton on Tees
  • More than ever space matters in place, have you got a strategy for this?
  • ‘First life, then spaces, then buildings’ – Jan Gehl
  • Places should collaborate more as usually they aren’t competing with each other?
  • Why can’t there be a strong England brand like Scotland and Wales have?
  • The most successful places use their brand as a way to forge greater collaboration and widen place leadership
  • The visitor economy experience can’t be done online … it’s the ‘want to do’ in your life
  • Having access to natural assets and green space is an absolute priority
  • Your sense of place comes from storytelling, the old ones and the new
  • Every place needs its advocates but they need to bring something to the party
