How culture can unlock the potential of your place


He’s the man with the golden touch … the inspirational leader who unlocks the power of culture to help places fulfil their potential.

Andrew Dixon has worked with more than 80 local authority areas and has over 35 years’ experience of promoting places through culture and tourism.

He’s best known as the man at the heart of two winning UK City of Culture bids, helping to inspire hitherto unheralded Hull and Coventry to claim the game-changing status of the nation’s cultural capital.

At thinkingplace we share Andrew’s passion for the role of culture in defining and animating places. We’ve also worked in the past with Hull and currently with Coventry and Warwickshire to create their stories and bring key people and organisations together to promote their unique places.

That’s why we’ve invited Andrew to share his unique perspectives and depth of knowledge as the UK’s number one cultural place-maker at our opinion-leading place event, “Creating Purposeful Places”, being held during MIPIM UK.

In Coventry, Andrew’s expertise and ours, working with a huge range of influential organisations and individuals, have dovetailed to transform a place that had lost its identity and confidence and was punching well below its weight.

A new narrative and elevated ambitions have delivered remarkable outcomes.

In December last year, Coventry was named as UK City of Culture 2021, succeeding the current titleholder, Hull. Meanwhile, the enhanced profile and reputation of Coventry and Warwickshire is now attracting record levels of interest and investment. The city centre is benefiting from hundreds of millions of pounds of regeneration, Coventry will be European City of Sport in 2019 and the Rolling Stones played in the city on their 2018 European tour.

John Till, Founding Director of thinkingplace, will be facilitating this must-attend MIPIM event and says Coventry’s story is a testament to the power of place.
